Notable Hikes
The Killingworth Land Conservation Trust (KLCT) manages several scenic trails across town. Popular trail systems include the Keystone Preserve, Cranberry Bogs Trail, and Winkel Pond Trail. Trails at Parmelee Farm connect to other open spaces and local landmarks, while the Hammonasset River Trail offers peaceful views along the river. Many of these paths highlight the area’s rich natural beauty and rural charm.
Seasonal Highlights
In spring, vernal pools come alive with frogs and salamanders. By summer, green forests offer cool shade, and birds fill the woods with song. Fall colors brighten the ridges and riverbanks, while in winter, snow-covered paths offer quiet, reflective walks through bare woods and icy marshes.

Local History
Killingworth was founded in 1663 and has deep agricultural and colonial roots. Farming, forestry, and early milling industries shaped the local economy. Remnants like stone walls, historic foundations, and old roads can still be spotted along trails today, giving a glimpse into the town’s past as you hike through it.

Conservation & Land Trust
The Killingworth Land Conservation Trust, founded in 1972, has protected over 1,000 acres of open space through direct ownership and conservation easements. The Trust manages a growing network of trails and relies on volunteers to help maintain paths, build boardwalks, and protect habitats. Their mission is to preserve the natural character of Killingworth, keeping trails and wild spaces open for all to enjoy.
